At 800 Meta UAE, we specialize in providing high-quality repairs and maintenance for luxury and performance vehicles, including iconic models like the Porsche 968. Recently, we had the privilege of performing a clutch replacement for a Porsche 968 in Dubai, and we’re proud to share the process and solutions we provided to restore the vehicle’s performance.

Issues Identified:

  1. Slipping Clutch
    • Issue: The most common symptom of a failing clutch is slipping — when the clutch fails to fully engage, causing the engine RPMs to increase without corresponding acceleration. In this case, the clutch was slipping under load, especially during rapid acceleration or when shifting to higher gears.
    • Solution: After confirming that the clutch was slipping due to worn-out friction material, we recommended a full clutch replacement. The Porsche 968 uses a dual-mass flywheel and a single-disc clutch, both of which were showing signs of wear. We replaced the worn clutch with a genuine OEM Porsche clutch kit, including the pressure plate, friction disc, and release bearing. We also inspected the flywheel for wear and resurfaced it to ensure smooth engagement.
  2. Stiff or Unresponsive Clutch Pedal
    • Issue: The owner also reported that the clutch pedal felt unusually stiff and difficult to press. This can be caused by a variety of issues, including worn or damaged clutch cables or a faulty hydraulic system (in the case of a hydraulic clutch).
    • Solution: After inspection, we found that the clutch hydraulic system had degraded over time, leading to improper clutch disengagement. The clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder were leaking and needed to be replaced. We installed OEM replacement cylinders and flushed the hydraulic lines with fresh fluid, restoring smooth and easy clutch pedal operation.
  3. Grinding or Difficulty Shifting Gears
    • Issue: The owner experienced difficulty shifting gears, especially into first and reverse. This is often a sign of a worn clutch release bearing or a misaligned clutch. If the clutch is not disengaging fully, the gears will grind or not shift smoothly.
    • Solution: Upon disassembling the clutch assembly, we discovered that the release bearing had worn out, causing the gears to grind. We replaced the faulty bearing with a new OEM Porsche release bearing and thoroughly inspected the entire clutch assembly for alignment. After the new clutch components were installed, the shifting issues were resolved, and the gears engaged smoothly.
  4. Vibrations or Noises When Engaging the Clutch
    • Issue: The owner also reported vibrations or unusual noises when engaging the clutch, which is often a sign of a problem with the flywheel or pressure plate. In some cases, a warped flywheel can cause these vibrations and noises.
    • Solution: We inspected the dual-mass flywheel and found slight warping due to heat buildup from previous wear. We replaced the flywheel with a high-quality OEM Porsche part and ensured that the clutch pressure plate was properly aligned to eliminate vibrations and restore smooth clutch engagement.
